Posted On August - 10 - 2011

The Pekingese is a small dog which needs special attention and care. This dog is full of charm and they get a lot of help from their big and expressive eyes. If you have a family they are perfect because they are small and do not take up too much space and do not make a mess. They have some special features which need special caring coming from the owner.

This type of breed has expressive eyes to go along with its regal face. The size and height are very small reaching from 6 to 9 inches in height and from 8 to 10 pounds in weight. There are dogs who weigh less than 6 pounds, this dog are called sleeve Pekingese because they were carried by the kings of Ancient China in their sleeves that is how small they were. There are also mini Pekingese which fit between the two, the normal Pekingese and the sleeve Pekingese, who weighs between 6 to 8 pounds.

They make perfect companions because they are very loving and protective of their family. They are good watchdogs because of their courage and confidence. They need proper training from an early age or as soon as you get them because they can become trouble makers because of their independence. They need an owner which takes charge and who will provide it with a daily routine.

They adapt very well to indoors, actually they like living in an apartment, but they do need some daily exercise. Our advice is to let them put of their leash from time to time but not too much because if they get too tired they can develop breathing problems.

The fur of the Pekingese is rich and soft and needs daily grooming. You need to brush it every day and make sure it’s clean. They are average dogs when it comes to shedding. Because they have such a sensible head they need their eyes and face cleaned every day.

When it comes to health issues we have to tell you that they are part of the daily life of the Pekingese. They are prone to breathing problems, back problems and eye problems. They can experience also heat strokes.

All in all they make great companions and watch dogs but they need a lot of taking care of, from the exercise to the health problems and ending with the daily cleaning.
